Overview of the Course

M.Sc Organic Chemistry

History Image

M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry for a versatile career with high demand in industries like pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and materials science, as well as for research, academia, and government roles. The degree provides in-depth knowledge of molecular structures, reactions, and synthesis, developing valuable skills in problem-solving, analysis, and practical laboratory techniques crucial for innovation in diverse sectors and for pursuing further specialization like a Ph.D.

What will you Learn?

Inorganic Chemistry: Determination of Symmetry operations and optical activity of small and medium-sized molecules. Study of CFT, LFT, MOT, Orgel and T-S diagrams of complexes.

Organic Chemistry: Study of Reaction mechanisms involved in various reactions like Additions, Substitutions, Elimination and Rearrangements. Understanding different types of strains, energy and stability of different conformers.

Physical Chemistry: Thermodynamics studies and energy changes (heat, work, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy) that drive chemical processes. Kinetics focuses on reaction rates, factors affecting them, and mechanisms. Quantum Chemistry applies quantum mechanics to atoms, molecules, bonding, and orbitals. Electrochemistry examines the link between electricity and chemical reactions, including cells and electrolysis.

Analytical Chemistry: Spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR, NMR, Mass) analyzes how substances interact with light or radiation to identify structure and composition. Chromatography (HPLC, GC) separates and analyzes mixtures using a medium. Electrochemical analysis measures electrical signals to determine chemical composition.

Research Methodology helps to develop practical skills that can be applied in real-world research projects, whether in academia, industry, or policy-making. Social outreach builds empathy, communication, and organizational skills while addressing real-world issues.

Advanced organic chemistry covers synthetic reagents, NMR techniques, asymmetric synthesis, and strategies for building complex molecules, including heterocyclic and conformational analysis with ORD. Green chemistry emphasizes sustainable processes, while drug design explores target identification, SAR/QSAR studies, synthesis, and mechanisms of drug action. Natural product research focuses on biosynthesis, stereoselective synthesis, and structure determination.

Career Prospects

  • The scope of MSc Chemistry extends to both the public and private sectors. Individuals holding an MSc in Chemistry can explore diverse career paths, including roles in Pharmaceutical Companies, Laboratories, Research Institutions, Schools, Colleges and Private Clinics.
  • Many students pursue an MSc in Chemistry to become Research Chemists, Academicians, or Industry Professionals. Some of India's highest paying chemistry jobs include Quality Control Chemist, Forensic Scientist, Organic Chemist, Pharmacist, etc.
