Message from the HOD

Dr. Kasuba Sirisha

"The Department of History is advancing historical scholarship, through an intellectual orientation, based on critical thinking, analytical interpretation, research and innovative problem-based learning, that explains specific historical contexts to grasp the causality of the present and envision changes in the future."

– Ms. Rooman Deb
Overview

β€œThere’s nothing like the past to put the present in context, and no time like the present to learn about the past. The Department of History, which is one of the oldest departments of the College, strives to uphold this motto.”

The Department of History was established in 1959, the year of the inception of the College. The curriculum focuses on the changes in society and the economy throughout Indian history, rather than emphasizing merely political history. The syllabus gives students a panoramic view of the development of Indian culture and civilization through the ages, and also a glimpse of parallelly occurring developments in the world. The Department was the trend setter in recognizing the enhancement of skill quotient in the curriculum, which led to introducing a course on Tourism as part of the curriculum as early as 2001. As of 2025, it has skill enhancement courses on Archival Studies, Museology, Research Methodology, and Heritage Studies. The curriculum is also designed to help students who aspire for the Civil Services, and prepares them for other competitive examinations as well. The Department has guided many fellow departments of History of autonomous colleges in the city to adopt innovations in their curriculum too. The Department also has a vibrant club named Quest Hour that provides students of History a platform to explore beyond classroom knowledge.

Best Practices Adopted by the Department

Title of the Practice- At the Site

SDG Goals: 4, 5, 10, 16 & 17

Oral & Group Presentations

Objectives

To enable the student to acquire skill-based knowledge and understanding of developments in the field of art, architecture, monuments, heritage structures, museums, libraries, patterns of trade and commerce in bygone era etc.

La Fiesta Club

Challenges that led to Implementation

This practice was adopted to imbue the course syllabi with skill enhancing knowledge in the domain of history and also provide experiential learning on real time basis on various aspects of history.

Interactive Sessions

Description

This is a learning process that requires a student to physically visit the site under study. Be it a study on fort structures, temples, palaces, water resource management systems, museums, the student has to visit the site and gather information on real time basis and collate that with information available through secondary sources. They are also encouraged to document information from primary sources as and how available. This also helps them to identify areas and give suggestions that need consideration from authorities in upkeep and maintenance of such structures, thus going beyond the mandate of the structured syllabi and learning.

Women's Writing & Gender Studies

Successful Implementation

This exercise enables the evaluator to ascertain development of skill-based knowledge in the concerned domain for the student through project work. Since its inception, exceptional work has been put by students in tracing the historical significance of monuments, forts, educational institutions, etc.in the state of Telangana and specifically in Hyderabad.

Peer Learning

Resources/Problems

The problems encountered were with regards to access, availability of sufficient data, but on a case-to-case basis. Efforts were constantly made by faculty through guidance to redress the problem.
