The Department of Microbiology, recognised as the Best Department at National Level by Microbiologists Society of India, is endowed with state-of-the-art research facilities in core areas of Microbiology and the allied fields. The studies carried out in specific thrust areas provide ample scope to students to discuss and translate research to meet the needs of the community. The Department envisions to equip students with knowledge to teach, carry out research, and contribute to industry for the benefit of humankind. The Department has witnessed progress in the field of Microbiology leading to National and International Reputation.

The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 1997 offering UG courses in Microbiology. The Master’s Degree Programme in Microbiology was started in the year 2003 and later was recognized as a Research Centre by Osmania University in the year 2014 to offer Ph.D. programme. B.Voc in Industrial Microbiology was started in 2014, Premed programme and PG Diploma in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics in 2016. To inculcate and build scientific temper among the students the Department launched MicroAura@SFC a student club in the year 2021, which is a Local chapter of MBSI.

The Department has an international collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, USA, which offers Study Exchange Program exploring the multifaceted journey of highlighting the opportunities and challenges students face. The program provides projects which facilitate practical guidance to students aspiring to study abroad, helping them make informed decisions and navigate their experiences successfully.

The Department has highly qualified, well-experienced staff as its asset. Faculty and students publish papers in reputed National & International Journals. The Department has Major and Minor Research Projects funded by DST, DBT, UGC, SFC and is equipped with well- established infrastructural facilities like Nanodrop, Vitek 2, Cold centrifuge, Bioreactor and Rotavap.

The curriculum is designed to train students with skills to become qualified and competent Microbiologists to take up Professional careers in various fields of Microbiology as Microorganisms play an important role in the bioprocess of all living organisms and maintain homeostasis of the universe.
