About

Overview

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is to "build the youth with the mind and spirit to serve society and work for the social uplift of the downtrodden masses". Its mission is to inspire youth through selfless service, guided by the motto "NOT ME BUT YOU,"

Launched on September 24, 1969, the Mahatma Gandhi Centenary year, by the then Union Education Minister Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao in 37 universities, NSS is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's ideals and operates under the motto "NOT ME, BUT YOU". The program seeks to build a link between colleges and communities, empowering students to identify and solve local problems while promoting national integration and civic responsibility.

Programme at SFC

Participation

St. Francis College for Women attempts to instill in students the spirit of community service by involving them in extension activities organized by the National Social Service (N.S.S.) units. Students opting for N.S.S. must put in a minimum of 60 hours of work to be eligible for the award of their degree. Such participation is awarded with one credit at the end of the undergraduate programme.

The college has the unique distinction of being the recipient of 4 National awards by the government for the National Social Service (N.S.S.) in the very year of the inception of the awards.

There are four Units of NSS. Programme officers, in collaboration with the N.S.S. unit of Osmania University, organize all related activities. Each of these four N.S.S. units adopt local slums, and organize diverse developmental activities and general awareness programs to improve the quality of life of the slum-dwellers.

This scheme is extended to all first and second year U.G. students of all streams, including B.Com (IPP). The scheme is extended to P.G. students as a two-week community service programme. The number of hours allotted for this scheme for two years of P.G. is 120 hours, with 2 credits.
